The Default Slot
The market doesn't leave you unfiled.
Every business gets placed somewhere in a buyer's mental category system, whether the business chose that category or not. The buyer has to put you somewhere. They can't hold you in suspension while they figure out what you are.
And here's what nobody tells you about how that filing works: the default slot is always the commodity version of your category.
If you're a consultant, the default is the $75-an-hour generalist. If you're a contractor, the default is the lowest bid. If you run a boutique agency, the default is the big cheap alternative down the road. The buyer isn't being difficult. They're using the nearest available category when nothing else signals otherwise.
This is placement. Not where you think you are, but where the buyer's brain actually puts you at the moment of first contact.
The businesses that consistently win on value aren't necessarily better at explaining themselves. They've learned to control the comparison before price enters the conversation. They chose the folder. They decide which question gets asked when someone finds them.
A financial advisor who positions as "wealth management" gets compared to every other wealth manager, which means the conversation goes to fees fast. The same advisor known specifically for helping business owners plan their exit gets compared to accountants and attorneys. Completely different conversation. Completely different price point.
Same credentials. Different placement. Different comparison. Different outcome.
The practical question is this: who does your buyer mentally compare you to when they first find you? If you don't know the answer, the market has probably already decided. And the default answer is almost never flattering.
You don't have to out-explain the competition. You have to out-place them.
Choose the comparison before the comparison gets chosen for you.

This is exciting. Good to see what Murati been up to.

Interesting concept.

Interesting thought exercise.

Sounds like something the richest person in the world would do. Instead of trying to fix the actual issue he's just passing the blame. What a 💩.

It's called Regulatory Capture. The foundation models want to squish out the open-weight models from being to compete. This is not an altruistic play here, folks!

Good on the European Union!

Geez, not mincing words is he?

I agree fully with Mathew. Kids need to experience the world and that includes, unfortunately social media.

So many people are getting this social media ban for kids wrong.

Github has enshittified. It's time to move on!

D'oh! 🤪🙄

Not surprised. Glad they're getting sued.
