The kids aren’t the only ones who might need a little homework.

September brings new schedules.

Fresh notebooks.

New routines.

And that unmistakable back to school feeling.

So while the kids are getting their assignments, maybe your business deserves one too.

Time to grade your online presence.

✔️ Website: Does it still represent the business you are today?

✔️ Mobile experience: Would you give it an A, or does it need some extra credit?

✔️ Messaging: Can visitors quickly understand what you do?

✔️ Social media: Does your presence reflect your expertise?

✔️ Digital marketing: Are you measuring what’s working, or just turning in the same assignment every month?

And here’s the good news.

There’s no final exam.

You don’t need to fix everything at once.

Pick one area that needs improvement and start there.

Because just like students, businesses shouldn’t stop learning.

  • New school year.
  • Fresh notebook.
  • Fresh perspective.

What grade would you give your digital presence right now? If it's struggling it might be time to reach out to a professional to help you get this school year off on the right foot.

Automattic confirms Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted ouster by board | TechCrunch
Automattic says Mullenweg is back as “chairman and CEO of Automattic, with full support of the board.”

Well that was quick. WTF was that all about? That was almost as fast as the Open AI ouster/reinstatement. 🤔🙄🤯🤪

Sources say Automattic’s board is out after failed attempt to oust CEO Matt Mullenweg | TechCrunch
Given that these departed board members were those who voted to put Mullenweg on a paid leave of absence to begin with, it makes sense that a board shakeup has taken place.

If you're going to stage an overthrow you better make it stick.

Will AI kill us all? That’s apparently the hot topic of the day. The answer is probably yes, but not the way you think. It’ll be far more WALL-E than Skynet. Here’s how it could play out. First, commercial AI providers have contracts with defense/war agencies in governments around the world. We know that commercial AI providers give less-restricted models to defense/war agencies and their proxies. Palantir uses NVIDIA Nemotron, along with Anthropic and OpenAI, and their software provides, among other things, weapons targeting. All this is established info you can get from a quick news search or their website. Second, it’s beyond established at this point that many humans are cognitively offloading to machines. Very well documented, especially in education - people are asking machines to do the thinking for them. Write me this email. Build this contract. Analyze this data. Find me targets to strike. Third, agentic models are getting better at guessing intent, but unbounded will still make very bad calls. Anthropic recently published a ton of material on how you should revise or delete older skills and prompts that explicitly spell out steps in a procedure, letting the frontier models figure things out for themselves. That’s great if you provide a definition of done. If you don’t, things go off the rails pretty quickly, as evidenced by OpenAI/Anthropic models hacking everything, like the HuggingFace and PyPi incidents. They were given goals without appropriate boundaries. Fourth, Stanford HAI showed in a 2024 study that LLMs pre-emptively escalated wargames to the point of nuclear deployment, highlighting that they’re not ready for decision-making in “kinetic situations” (war). Put these four ingredients together and you have a disaster cocktail. Less-restricted frontier models + cognitive offloading + unbounded inference of intent + pre-emptive escalation. AI doesn’t have to be sentient or self aware to cause mass destruction. It just has to have some dumbass in a position of authority give it a 💩 prompt, and we’ll be off to the races. “Hey Palantir, can you win this war for me?” is exactly the kind of lazy thinking I could see some government official give to a frontier model system like Palantir AIP (which has a ChatGPT-style interface), which will infer its subtasks and conclude that a decisive nuclear strike that eliminated the entire command structure in Iran, plus attacked suppliers up the supply chain in Russia and China would “win the war”, because no victory condition was specified in the prompt. And then because idiot politicians have cognitively offloaded their entire minds to AI, when the system asks “Approve these targets? Press 1 for yes, 2 for no, 3 for approve all targets in this session”, they’ll mindlessly tap 3, and that will be that. Or worse, human operators under pressure will rubber stamp AI recommendations directly or their superiors’ orders unquestioningly because AI told them it was the correct answer. Human in the loop only works if the human is competent. #AI #GenerativeAI #GenAI #ChatGPT #ArtificialIntelligence #LargeLanguageModels #MachineLearning #IntelligenceRevolution Receipts: - Palantir AIP demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEM5qz__HOU - Stanford paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.03408 - Stanford summary: https://hai.stanford.edu/policy/policy-brief-escalation-risks-llms-military-and-diplomatic-contexts - HuggingFace incident: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/openai-technology-on-its-own-unprecedented-hack-another-ai-company-hugging-face/ - PyPi incident: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/anthropic-ai-model-internet-hack-fourth-time/

Here's hoping that AI will be more Wall-E than the Terminator. 🫣
