Unpopular Opinion: You Should Embrace Artificial Intelligence
Now hear me out. I'm not saying embrace AI blindly, but ignoring this new technology and refusing to use and learn how to use it will hurt you more than using it.
Editor's note: Yes, I now realize that the newsletter version I had an extraneous "to" in the headline. That's a human error. This article was clearly NOT written by AI. 🙄
I get it. Artificial Intelligence is a very polarizing technology and topic. Data centers are noisy and in many places polluting as well. But done right, which granted most are not, data centers can be sustainable.
According to a recent study by Redfin, older generations oppose data centers way more than the younger generations.
Nearly half (47%) of U.S. residents oppose the construction of an artificial intelligence data center in their neighborhood, while 38% support it.
Gen Zers (48%) and millennials (50%) are more likely than Gen Xers (38%) and baby boomers (22%) to support data centers in their backyard.
In some states and counties where there are lots of data centers, the quality of life has improved. In others, not so much. And for those places where it hasn't things need to be done.
AI Isn't Going Anywhere
But this comes back to AI in general. AI isn't going anywhere. You can wish all you want but it's here. Just like the Internet isn't going anywhere or any other revolutionary technology.
It's how you use AI that matters. I'm a proponent of using AI as a tool, not a replacement. Use AI to systematize your processes and streamline tasks that can be repetitive and not money making. Yes, I hear people screaming, but those are jobs that are being taken away. They are. But other jobs are being created.
Paging Mr. Gutenberg!
At many points in history, people have pushed back on the new technology. I'll invoke Gutenberg and his printing press. The church thought it was heresy. (Read more about this in Jeff Jarvis' fantastic book The Gutenberg Parenthesis.) But what Gutenberg did was democratize publishing.
The Net Was Revolutionary
The Internet and the Web has supplanted so many different industries that aren't relevant anymore. E-commerce, for better or worse (worse in my opinion) has decimated Main Street. And search, well before AI, has pretty much killed print media.
Test The Waters
AI is just the next technological innovation. And refusing to use it at all is going to be detrimental in the long run.
I'm not advocating for people to just hand the keys over to AI without a human in the loop. Absolutely not!
Again... AI IS A TOOL. Just like cavemen using a rock as a too, we're using AI as exactly that... A TOOL.
Can AI be implemented better? Yes! Without a doubt. Should AI be controlled by the rich and not the general public, NO!
Is Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI (or whatever it's called right now), and Google calling for regulation from the government blatant regulatory capture? YES! And that is evil and shouldn't be allowed.
But I go back to my overall argument, not using the next technological innovation isn't saving anyone, it's just making you fall behind.
So test out AI, learn how to use in responsibly and to improve your life.

Um, absolutely NOT! Ick!

Of course they're going to justify it!

He's doing what he needs to do as the CEO.

Oof. Pure stupidity. But do we expect anything else from Meta?

Doh!

Good!

Fully agree!

I agree with James here.

They've been in a moderation mess for a while now, tbh.

Oops! I don't think that's a feature. 🤯🙄 Even the holy isn't safe from leaks apparently.

Interesting and informative. Worth a read.
