The Thing About Sydney Sweeney & American Eagle

The thing about the Sydney Sweeney Jeans advert did exactly what American Eagle wanted. A response.

Sydney Sweeney in all denim laying on side with the words: "American Eagle Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans" on top.
The controversial advertisement from American Eagle.

What happens when you add a beautiful actor in jeans, with cleavage, to your ad and then do word play with the word jeans? Buzz. Uproar. Press.

I don't think American Eagle, the clothing brand that was behind this ad campaign, was shocked by the response. In fact, though a bit dated and sexist, it was clever. Because in most cases, no press is bad press. Especially now with other topical news stories generating more anger.

Do I think this ad was sexist and played on Sydney's sex appeal? Yes. But how is this different from lots of different ads out there? At least this one was "clever-ish" with the Jeans/Genes word play.

Now there are people trying to read in to it saying that it's Nazi propaganda, because it's talking about genes. Come on. Sydney is gorgeous and in fact has good genes and she's wearing jeans. I think it's just that. The company is trying to sell denim.

Look, I get why people are upset. And American Eagle knew what it was doing.

I'd like to see the end return-on-investment report from this stunt. Heck it got me talking about it!

In the end as much as we don't want to admit it – sex sells.

What do you think? Was this a brilliant ad campaign or just downright sleazy?
