YouTube Is Important To The Podcast Industry, But Isn't Everything

YouTube is a great place to watch podcasts that are put out as podcasts in audio only on the feeds. But YouTube isn't podcasting and not all podcasts need to be video.

As I sit here I'm fuming over the latest so-called guru saying that you NEED to be on YouTube to have your podcast found and consumed.

That's just not true. Yes, YouTube is a the 2nd biggest search engine after it's parent Google (well for now at least). It's a great place to put the video version of your podcast for those who want to watch. But it's not the only place to listen and consume podcasts.

Admittedly, I do watch a bunch of my podcasts via YouTube. But I also listen to even more in Pocket Casts (my podcast aggregator/player of choice).

Tom Webster, from Sounds Profitable, has said that podcasts are more than YouTube and should not be synonymous with YouTube.

When I talk to my podcast coaching clients about launching their shows I mention that they should have their shows on YouTube, but they need to also focus on producing high-quality audio for those who don't use YouTube.

For example, the Entrepreneur's Enigma Podcast gets 1,000 listeners to each episode, yet on YouTube my subscriber count is just below 100 subscribers. You know what this means? People aren't all in on YouTube for consuming the podcast. And Entrepreneur's Enigma has a video component.

To be honest, without YouTube premium the video platform kind of sucks for consumption because there are way too many freaking ads.

All I'm saying is that when you start a podcast you need to look at the overall picture. Make sure you're in all the podcast directories (and YouTube). Make sure you have good show notes in the description area of your show. Make those show notes helpful with links and bios.

And most of all, have fun with your show. Podcasting isn't going to produce results overnight. It's a long game. And YouTube is just part of it.
