YouTube... A Podcast App?
According to Edison Research, YouTube is dominant for podcasts? More people listen/watch podcasts on YouTube than even Spotify.

YouTube is the go-to platform for podcasts!? I'd like to say that I'm surprised, but I'm not. According to Edison Research more people listen and watch podcasts on YouTube than even Spotify and far above Apple Podcasts.
YouTube, typically known as the go-to platform for video content, has risen to the top as the most popular service used for podcast listening in the U.S. … 31% of weekly podcast listeners age 13 and up choose YouTube as the service they use most to listen to podcasts, surpassing Spotify (27%) and Apple Podcasts (15%).
The reason I'm not surprised is that I find myself, when the podcast/show has a video component, I like to watch the hosts and guests visually. There's more to see and the facial expressions during the discussions are often worth the advertisements that I get for watching YouTube without the premium membership.
Now, I don't consume ALL my podcasts via YouTube. I use Pocket Casts on my iPhone to listen to other shows that don't have a video component or when I'm on the go. I think that's why the stat is still only 31% and not 50% or more.
YouTube is the second biggest search engine after it's sibling Google. It's smart for podcasters to put their shows on the platform, especially for discovery.
I tell my Podcast Mastery clients all the time they need to have at least their audio with the album art on YouTube if not the video of their show itself.
Video used to be a barrier to entry on YouTube and in podcasting in general. But with advent of artificial intelligence-enabled editing tools like Descript, editing your podcast videos has never been easier.
Where do you consume your podcasts? I want to know. Hit reply and fill me in.

Tom Webster had a good take on this phenomenon of people listening/watching podcasts on YouTube and other walled gardens.
A great debrief from Jeffrey Zeldman the father of Web & Interaction Design on what he's learned from hosting conferences, starting a book publishing company, and running an agency. Zeldman is the god-father, in many ways, of how Websites should work. It's a good read.
A little geeky, but very interesting. I've always wondered what happens when a Mastodon server goes offline and is deleted. I've had my fair share of servers in the Mastodon universe, all hosted, as a matter of fact, on Masto.host, and have noticed that my old server doesn't disappear right away from the federated services.
Of course they aren't ruling out ads! Why would they. They're a for-profit company. The nice thing is that Bluesky is decentralized (or that's the hope) so if you don't like the server that has ads then, in theory, you can move your account to a server that doesn't. This is one reason why I'm not abandoning Mastodon and the Fediverse. I'm wary of where Bluesky will go.
An interesting take from Joe Casabona. He's a longtime podcaster and fellow podcasting coach. I think solo podcasts are good if you have something to say that people want to listen to. But if it's just drivel than maybe stick to a different format. Joe's solo episodes are quite good, short, and informative.
A very smart article from the CEO of Technical.ly, Chris Wink, on why we should care about the creator economy and how to use it.
Looks like TikTok isn't having a good time right now. I'm still waiting to see what Trump does. He was in favor of the ban during his first term.
And this is why you don't just use AI verbatim. You use it as a tool and then check it and improve on it.
Took it long enough. Now digital marketers and SEOs need to see what damage was done and how we can fix our clients' reach. FUN!
Honestly, it already has changed so much. I expect it will continue even faster in 2025.
A must read from Jeremy Enns. There are a lot of misconceptions in the podcast marketing space. Many need to be quashed.
This report from PodMatch is worth digging through.
A great article pointing out that if you're on Bluesky you're data is probably being scraped for a dataset. I see both sides here. On one side, how dare they without consent. The other side, you're posting publicly on the Internet, what do you or can you expect? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
I'd pay for this. Especially if it makes Bluesky Ad-free.

🎙️New Offering: Podcast Coaching 🎙️
I've been podcasting since 2010. During those 12+ years I've learned a thing or two about the ins and outs of the industry and approaching it the right way.
I've recently decided to offer podcast coaching as a service to share the knowledge that I've accumulated over the decade-plus in the industry.
