TikTok's Canadian Operations Shut Down By The Government. Yet Another Reason To Own Your Content

The Canadian government has told TikTok to start packing and leave the country. This is big news and a reminder to everyone to OWN YOUR CONTENT.

The Canadian government has ordered TikTok to cease corporate operations in the country.

The app will still be able to be used by users but no corporate presence in Canada.

I've said this over and over. You need to own your content. If you get kicked off a platform or a government shuts down the app or even worse blocks it from users, which is not the case in Canada. All the content you put on that platform isn't accessible anymore and as good as lost.

If you post first to your owned properties, website and blog, then you always have your content accessible. I also strongly urge my clients to backup their content so they have a copy just in case.

With the new administration coming in January in the United States, I don't think any of us know what to expect in the way of tech and TikTok's future.

Right now, ByteDance, the owners of TikTok are under court order to sell of TikTok to a non-Chinese entity on the 19th of January. But this might change with the incoming administration. Again, we just don't know.

Regardless, having a contingency plan and publish your content first on your owned platforms is the wisest thing to do.

What do you think? Is TikTok going to get "kicked out" in the US like they have in Canada? Let me know your thoughts.

Website builders aim to simplify the design and build processes. But they take control of the output, and there’s no guarantee they’ll employ best practices.

Some very good points made here by Eric. Page builders can make constructing a website quick and easier than without one, but sometime the trades-offs aren't worth it.
