The RSL Collective Aims To Make AI Scraping Pay

Getting artificial intelligence companies to pay for access to content seems reasonable. The RSL Collective hopes to pave the way.

The RSL Collective, a new initiative founded by one of the co-founders of RSS, aims to have Artificial Intelligence companies pay to scrap participating sites.

The nonprofit RSL Collective brings together millions of online publishers and creators to protect their rights and negotiate for fair compensation from AI companies.

On the surface this sounds like a solid idea. Have the AI companies pay for access to sites that participate and compensate the authors/creators for their work.

From the TechCrunch article:

Now a group of technologists and web publishers has launched a system that would enable data licensing at massive scale — provided AI companies take them up on it. Called Real Simple Licensing (RSL), the system is already being backed by major web publishers like Reddit, Quora, and Yahoo. The question now is whether that momentum will be enough to bring major AI labs to the bargaining table.
According to RSL co-founder Eckart Walther, who also co-created the RSS standard, the goal was to create a training-data licensing system that could scale across the internet. “We need to have machine-readable licensing agreements for the internet,” Walther told TechCrunch. “That’s really what RSL solves.”

I think this could be promising if it is widely adopted and followed by the AI companies. That is yet to be determined.

As a content creator and writer, I'd like some compensation for the work I produce, especially if it's being used to train our future AI overlords.

The details look to be live, can be implemented, and look straight forward enough.

It looks to be as simple as updating your Robots.txt file, but I heard something about having to be tied into the Fastly CDN network as well.

Whether or not this will catch on, only time can tell. I'll report back with my experience with it.
