The Decentralized Web Is Growing And Evolving

Mastodon, Bluesky, Pixelfed, Lemmy, etc. The decentralized web is growing and there are now services that mirror big tech and gives people options for connecting.

This is HUGE. This past week was Fediforum, a twice-yearly event that highlights the various services and improvements made to the decentralized social web. This is something that marketers should be aware of.

There is now, pretty much, a decentralized version of a big tech property on the web and its growing.

When I say marketers need to be aware of this phenomenon, I don't mean go spam the crap out of these networks, I mean figure out how to engage, provide value, and grow with these networks.

Sites like Bluesky and Mastodon are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to services on the decentralized web. (I'm deliberately keeping Bluesky in this, even though the service isn't totally decentralized... yet.)

There are sites that are like Reddit forums (Lemmy, Piefed, Kbin). There are Twitter-like services (Mastodon, Bluesky). There's even a video streaming tool –Owncast, and a video hosting/sharing service – Peertube.

The sky's the limit when it comes to what can be built and developed using the open protocols of the open decentralized web. And there is an audience there waiting to hear from you.

Don't get left behind. But, please, do it right.

YouTube Isn’t Dominating Podcasting - Signal Hill Insights
There’s no doubt that YouTube has become an important force in podcasting, primarily due to growing consumer preference for the video platform. This is a good move. And a large contrast to Open AI.

Zero-click searches rise, organic clicks dip: Report
AI tools like ChatGPT are growing, but Google still dominates. YouTube is a top destination and more clicks stay within Google’s ecosystem.

This is going to continue to grow.

Perplexity grows to 780 million monthly queries

New FAIR Project Aims to Decentralize WordPress.org Services, Backed by Linux Foundation and Hundreds of Contributors
A coalition of WordPress contributors, open source organizations and businesses have launched a project they hope will reshape how WordPress sites connect to the wider ecosystem — and remove dependency on WordPress.org while securing the project’s future.

This is huge news. Especially after what's been happening with WordPress and the WP Engine suit and all the lock-outs of plugin developers over the past year. The repository needs to be separate from Matt Mullenweg and the WordPress Foundation, IMHO.

What is vibe coding? A computer scientist explains what it means to have AI write computer code − and what risks that can entail
Vibe coding is a buzzy phrase that describes using AI language tools to write software. You enter a natural language phrase for what you want – to a point – and get back code.

A good read on what vibe coding is from an expert.

It’s Time for Matt Mullenweg & Automattic to Accept Reality
