Should AI Have Legal Rights?

Some say yes. Others, not surprisingly, say Hell NO! As for me, I'm not sure. On one hand it could be a dangerous slope, but on the other hand...

Should Artificial Intelligence get legal rights? Is this a bridge too far? Have we lost our collective mind? I'm not so sure.

Do I think that AI is more than just a computer? It's definitely a high-powered, that's for sure. Do I think that AI should be able to read the Web to get better and provide better results, I tend to lean on the side of yes to that.

But overall legal rights. That's a head-scratcher for me. Is AI sentient? NO. Not yet at least. And when it becomes sentient, God help us!

From the Wired article on this topic:

“We remain highly uncertain about the potential moral status of Claude and other LLMs, now or in the future,” Anthropic said in a blog post. “However, we take the issue seriously, and alongside our research program we’re working to identify and implement low-cost interventions to mitigate risks to model welfare.”

Now is the welfare of the model more important than human welfare? Stick with me here.

We don't want to get AI off its guardrails where it does crazy stuff. That's less for the protection of the AI, but for the human user. Am I right?

Again from the Wired article:

Perhaps surprisingly, model welfare researchers are among the people pushing back against the idea that AI should be considered conscious, at least right now. Rosie Campbell and Robert Long, who help lead Eleos AI, a nonprofit research organization dedicated to model welfare, told me they field a lot of emails from folks who appear completely convinced that AI is already sentient. They even contributed to a guide for people concerned about the possibility of AI consciousness.

Whether or not AI is conscious or not, shouldn't we be focused on what we're doing to humans in the real world? Because we know that humans are in fact conscious, feel things, and should be treated as such. To be honest we suck at even that in most cases.

This still won't get me to be overly active on Threads, but a good move on Meta's part for releasing a much desired feature.

This Robot Only Needs a Single AI Model to Master Humanlike Movements

Um... this is neat, but also absolutely terrifying! 😱

Google’s Danny Sullivan: ‘Good SEO is good GEO’
Google’s former search liaison says SEO is still about doing good things for people. He also addressed concerns about clicks dropping.

The Industry Mourns The Loss Of Alan Bleiweiss - Caring & Giving Search Marketer
I am deeply sad to report that Alan Bleiweiss has passed away on August 22nd. Alan was a true friend to the search marketing industry; he always had a witty and funny response to make everyone smile, even during the most frustrating times. He cared deeply about the industry, the people within it and his friends and family.

I never met Alan in real person, but interacted with him on Social Media quite a bit. I definitely shed a few tears reading this. 😞 He will be missed. RIP Alan!

Apple to launch AI search for Siri in 2026: Report
Apple’s new AI search engine, World Knowledge Answers, will power Siri and Safari with quick, multimodal answers built on LLMs.

On a lighter note... Apple's going to get into the AI search game in 2026. I'll believe it when I see it. They are so far behind.

AI Generated ‘Boring History’ Videos Are Flooding YouTube and Drowning Out Real History
“These AI videos are just repeating things that are on the internet, so you end up with a very simplified version of the past.”

4chan and Kiwi Farms Sue the UK Over its Age Verification Law
The notorious troll sites filed a lawsuit in U.S. federal court as part of a fight over the UK’s Online Safety Act.

I'm no fan of 4chan and don't even know what Kiwi Farms is, but they have a point these age verification laws and especially the UK one are bad.

Google doesn't lose much in one of its two anti-trust cases. Divesting from Chrome seemed like a big stretch.
