Should AI Have Legal Rights?
Some say yes. Others, not surprisingly, say Hell NO! As for me, I'm not sure. On one hand it could be a dangerous slope, but on the other hand...

I'm hoping for 10 new paying subscribers by the end of this month so I can sustain the newsletter. Will you be one of them?

Should Artificial Intelligence get legal rights? Is this a bridge too far? Have we lost our collective mind? I'm not so sure.
Do I think that AI is more than just a computer? It's definitely a high-powered, that's for sure. Do I think that AI should be able to read the Web to get better and provide better results, I tend to lean on the side of yes to that.
But overall legal rights. That's a head-scratcher for me. Is AI sentient? NO. Not yet at least. And when it becomes sentient, God help us!
From the Wired article on this topic:
“We remain highly uncertain about the potential moral status of Claude and other LLMs, now or in the future,” Anthropic said in a blog post. “However, we take the issue seriously, and alongside our research program we’re working to identify and implement low-cost interventions to mitigate risks to model welfare.”
Now is the welfare of the model more important than human welfare? Stick with me here.
We don't want to get AI off its guardrails where it does crazy stuff. That's less for the protection of the AI, but for the human user. Am I right?
Again from the Wired article:
Perhaps surprisingly, model welfare researchers are among the people pushing back against the idea that AI should be considered conscious, at least right now. Rosie Campbell and Robert Long, who help lead Eleos AI, a nonprofit research organization dedicated to model welfare, told me they field a lot of emails from folks who appear completely convinced that AI is already sentient. They even contributed to a guide for people concerned about the possibility of AI consciousness.
Whether or not AI is conscious or not, shouldn't we be focused on what we're doing to humans in the real world? Because we know that humans are in fact conscious, feel things, and should be treated as such. To be honest we suck at even that in most cases.

I've been podcasting since 2010. During those 12+ years I've learned a thing or two about the ins and outs of the industry and approaching it the right way.
I've decided to offer podcast coaching as a service to share the knowledge that I've accumulated over the decade-plus in the industry.

This still won't get me to be overly active on Threads, but a good move on Meta's part for releasing a much desired feature.

Um... this is neat, but also absolutely terrifying! 😱

A good follow up on the talk Danny Sullivan, of Google, gave at WordCamp US last week. A well thought out post from the publication Sullivan once ran.

I never met Alan in real person, but interacted with him on Social Media quite a bit. I definitely shed a few tears reading this. 😞 He will be missed. RIP Alan!

Another pioneer has gone too soon! 😞 RIP Todd!

On a lighter note... Apple's going to get into the AI search game in 2026. I'll believe it when I see it. They are so far behind.

AI slop is here and is all over YouTube and making us dumber! As a History buff and someone who has a bachelors in History, this bums me out!
I'm no fan of 4chan and don't even know what Kiwi Farms is, but they have a point these age verification laws and especially the UK one are bad.
Google doesn't lose much in one of its two anti-trust cases. Divesting from Chrome seemed like a big stretch.

We need to defend Wikipedia!
I think community-first thinking is key!

My kid is going to be all over this!

Doh! Well that's not good!

Not surprised. No AI is safe. If you let your kids use AI, watch their interactions with the technology closely.

Not letting devs avoid AI on Github is a bad move for Microsoft. It's time for a mass exodus from that platform.

A good read and synopsis of what's at stake. I'm looking forward to reading Tim Berners-Lee's new book!

Looks like Web3 is D-E-A-D! Thank God!

About time. And a standard feature not one you have to pay for! That's a win!

Thank goodness they will be preserved. I grew up on Sesame Street and love me some Elmo! And Grover... don't get me started on how great Grover is! 💗

A good conference talk from a buddy of mine Andy Piper of Mastodon Comms.
