QR Codes And Marketing

Before the pandemic these codes were just hype and not really taking off. Now it looks like they're here to stay.

I remember, pre-pandemic, when QR codes were a thing. They were ugly and rudimentary. Lots of marketing teams tried them out, but it seemed as though they weren't taking off. Honestly they fell flat.

Enter the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent reopening of society. Once things started opening up again, restaurants went the QR-route to share their menus and, of course, marketers took notice. It seems like now every ad has a QR code associated with it that leads to additional content or information.

Band, movie, promotional posters all have these codes.

Now QR codes are better designed and have tons of uses. I've noticed people at networking events sharing and scanning QR codes to exchange info easily. Lots of apps like LinkedIn and Alignable make dynamic QR codes for their users to connect in person via their networks.

It's a whole new world!

I think they're need, but worry that people will also misuse them. And I'm sure many are.

Like putting a random USB drive in your computer, you don't want to scan a random QR code. So there is a vector for misuse, which is worrisome.

But overall the utility of the QR code, in my opinion, out weigh the downsides.

What do you think? Do you use QR codes? Mash that reply button and let me know.

The updates keep coming for Meta’s dedicated video editing app.

Wish this wasn't a Meta product. I'd be all over it. But good on Meta for iterating on the app.

Google’s Mueller Says Sites In A ‘Bad State’ May Need To Start Over
Google’s John Mueller says sites with low-quality AI content should rethink their purpose rather than manually rewrite pages. Starting fresh may be faster than recovering.

Sometimes you just have to start over. Ugh, can you imagine having to do that? I guess I can, but still it's painful to think about!

In a wide-ranging interview with Eugen Rochko, creator of the decentralized social network Mastodon, Rochko shared why Threads federation fell flat, why ActivityPub and ATProto will likely never merge, and what it will take to grow the fediverse.

AI regulation in Philly is coming — here’s what it could mean for startups and city technology
Federal, state and local governments are all grappling with how to legislate the emerging tech, as small businesses brace for compliance.

This hits home. Philly, in my opinion, already struggles with the tech scene. I fear that the Luddites in City Hall will further squash any innovation we can get in our city. And you know what? It affects the suburbs too, because the city is a major draw of talent, who can work/live in the burbs. I'm in no way saying no regulation. I'm saying let's be smart about it.

Google is rolling out Android RCS Archival on Pixel phones, allowing employers to intercept and archive RCS chats on work-managed devices.
