Podcasting Is Not About The Numbers It's About The Quality

Podcasting is about the quality of the podcast, and I don't necessarily mean the editing, and the quality of the community around it. Not how big the community is.

I can't stress this enough. You don't have to be #1 on Apple Podcasts or Spotify to get tons of value out of podcasting. If you're on the podcaster side of the coin, having a podcast only gives you credibility, but also gives you content you can repurpose and use throughout your online life. On the guest side of things, being on other people's podcasts allows you to also show your knowledge and credibility.

Now that I'm doing my podcast coaching program for business owners, Podcast Mastery, I've had countless people bring up how many podcasts are out there.

Yes, there are millions of podcasts. But most of them are dormant, on a break, or faded-into-the-ether. Just because there's an interview podcast out already, doesn't mean you can't do one too, with your own spin and have a variety of guests that you can ask unique questions.

Many of my podcast coaching clients, have started from nothing, and have grown a decent following. Now let me make this caveat. A "decent following" is in the eye of the beholder. Entrepreneur's Enigma isn't a hugely listened to podcast. I get around 1,000 to 1,500 listeners a month. I'm no Joe Rogan or Kelly Roach, but I do get quite a bit of feedback from my listeners and request from people to be on my show. So clearly my little slice is an active one.

Like I said at the beginning. Podcasting isn't about the numbers it about the all around quality. And that goes for guesting on podcasts too. Don't try and only target big name podcasts. Go on the smaller ones, you'll have a bigger impact there. Trust me, I've been at the podcasting game for 12+ years. I'm an "old hat" at it.

A Plea for Unity: Safeguarding the Future of WordPress
This is an open letter to appeal to divert all energy being wasted in fights towards co-creating a fully independent, transparent, and strong WordPress Foundation v2.Let’s invest in an independent guardian angel so fights like this can’t hurt the FOSS project and it’s community as a whole.

WordPress needs to win. The FLOSS project. Not Matt Mullenweg. These two "titans" need to put on their big boy pants and cut it the f*ck out.

The Podcast Landscape, 2024 - Sounds Profitable
While there is no shortage of advice about how to grow a single podcast, how do we grow podcasting?

A good survey to look through. Something of note: most people still consume their podcasts via audio and not video.

Employees Describe an Environment of Paranoia and Fear Inside Automattic Over WordPress Chaos
Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg made another buyout offer this week, and threatened employees who speak to the press with termination.

I can only imagine what it's like now at Automattic. I can only see from the outside in, from the open source project, but it can't be great moral.

Marc Benioff warns that AI, while useful, is overhyped and partly blames Microsoft | TechCrunch
One of the tech industry’s biggest hype men, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, is psyched about AI, but points out that it hasn’t cured cancer.

Shots fired! Though Salesforce uses AI quite a bit and Benioff is a big hype man for technology. Do I think Microsoft is partially to blame. Sure! But Benioff isn't totally blame-free.

After selling Drift, ex-HubSpot exec launches AI for customer success managers | TechCrunch
Elias Torres has achieved a lot for somebody who immigrated to the U.S. from Nicaragua at 17 without knowing any English. He served as a VP of engineering

Might this help with the language barrier that you sometimes get when calling customer support? Sure? Maybe? I'm not so sure. How many times have you caught yourself screaming at a inanimate IVR system? Tons of times for me.

Semrush acquires Search Engine Land
Leading SaaS platform Semrush acquired Search Engine Land, SMX and all of our sibling publications.

Not sure how I feel about this. Semrush is a great tool, but I'm not a huge fan of companies owning media that covers them. Editorial independence is important. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

SearchGPT gives brands 4x more referrals vs. Perplexity, Claude
SearchGPT is still in limited beta, but it’s starting to send more referral traffic to brands than established generative engines.

Promising? Maybe.

7 reasons you can’t rely on third-party cookies
Cookie-reliant measurement is falling short. It’s time to diversify your marketing strategy for more accurate attribution and insights.

Yep, third-party cookies had a good run. But even with Chrome allowing them (kinda), it's time to find new options and rely more on first-party data.

YouTube Clarifies Shorts Changes, Expands Sponsored Content Tags
The latest round of updates from YouTube HQ.

Looks like YouTube, the second biggest Search Engine, is doubling down on Shorts and making much welcomed changes (my opinion) to the offering.

My take on the latest craziness with Matt Mullenweg.

Restore Trust – An open letter to the WordPress community and Matt - CoachBirgit
Dear lovely human who cares about open-source and its freedom, How has your sleep been recently? It’s again a night, I can’t sleep well. Many thoughts keeping me up at night. Thoughts and conversations running wild in my head. Did you see the movie “Inside out 2”? The current accumulation of my feelings reminds me…

A well written open letter to both Matt Mullenweg and the community as a whole.

Pretty good updated timeline of the whole fiasco.

WP Engine asks court to stop Matt Mullenweg from blocking access to WordPress resources
The WordPress fight is heating up.

I think the court should stop Matt Mullenweg from weakening the ecosystem by blocking WPE from the WP.org repo.

Grubz has a good post on why federated social media matters

I for one welcome Bluesky, the ATmosphere, BTS ARMY, and millions of Brazilians to the fediverses! (UPDATED)
Bem vendos aos fediverses!

The more the merrier.

Wow. This is damning. Not surprised by it. Geezus. I used to want to work at Automattic, but so glad I never really pursued it.

Google’s NotebookLM now lets you guide AI-generated audio conversations, launches business pilot | TechCrunch
Google’s NotebookLM has updated Audio Overviews with the ability to focus on a specific topic in the given content and has introduced a NotebookLM Business pilot program for organizations.
