Pay-Per-Crawl Through Cloudflare Is Intriguing
Having artificial intelligence crawlers pay a toll to read and digest your content online is an intriguing proposal and Cloudflare is doing it.
I'm fan of Cloudflare and keep adding it to my to do list to investigate them further as a vendor for my clients' DNS.
Recently Cloudflare announced they are developing a way for websites, going through the Cloudflare system, to charge AI bots/crawlers a toll to access and digest the site's content.
Many in the SEO/AIO/GEO space see this as a potential turning point for the industry and to be honest AI companies who are benefiting from our content should pay for the content. If we're charging people to read why not the bots too.
Will this save the online publishing industry (ie. News outlets, magazines, etc.)? Probably not, but I'm still intrigued from a marketing perspective.
There is a growing trend of journalists and writers going out on their own and trying to support themselves through subscriptions from readers. This is another avenue.
Not only do you get paid for access to your content, but your content get cited in the AI search, which does provide some traffic (albeit not as much as traditional search). So in a way, it's a win/win.
Marketers can start using the gate to support their market research as well.
