Holy Cow! The Web Is 35!

Holy Cow! The Web Is 35!

Wow, the World Wide Web is turning 35!

In one way I want to say, Only 35? And on the other hand, It's That Old?! I'm at a weird spot in Web History. At 42, born in 1981, I'm barely a millennial. I'm what they call Elder. 😵‍💫

I'm old enough to remember before the Web, but I barely do. I remember getting on AOL in the 90's and thinking it was so cool. I got into Web design in 1998, helping build my prep school's first website. At that point, I was all in.

Fast forward 35 freaking years, I'm a digital marketer, on the Web for more hours than I'd like to admit, and making a living doing so.

Now it's not every 5 years or every year for that matter that things change. It's every day, every hour, every minute.

If you think about it too hard you can get whiplash.

Moore's law is pretty much out the window and many of the Web 2.0 giants are trying to pivot and change for the new wave.

Decentralization is here and it looks weird and unfamiliar. This isn't the first time we've had islands on the web. Remember the hay day of blogs in the early '00s and early '10s? We seem to have gone full circle. From behemoths like X/Twitter and Facebook to islands and federations like BlueSky and Mastodon/The Fediverse.

I'm excited to see where this all goes. I'm thrilled to see a way for the next generations to make a living online. I'm also scared because technology in general and even more so on the web is going so fast, that you can get lost in the exhaust as it passes you by in the blink of an eye.

As far as marketing goes online, that's an interesting discussion. With the European Union cracking open tech and making it listen to privacy laws, I think we're in for more evolution. Will it all be good? No. Bad... not so much either. Just different. And we either adapt or die.
