Google At WordCamp US Says They Are In Favor Of The Open Web

Google's Danny Sullivan was at WordCamp US in Portland, Oregon this past week and said Google needs the open web. Of course it does. So it can feed its Artificial Intelligence System. Let's not forget that.

When Danny came up on stage I was curious what he was going to say. I was watching via the live stream on YouTube.

As to be expected Danny gave an overview of how Google works and then went into how Google's AI Overviews work.

He did a decent job of towing the company line when it comes to crawling the Web and AI. He even threw in some Dad Jokes and tangents about his kids.

Overall, I've always liked Danny. He's a very friendly and outgoing guy. I've had the pleasure of meeting him before as well, before he joined Google.

What I found most obvious, but it needed to be said, is write good content for the visitors to the site and Google will benefit from that as well.

Honestly, I've been on my soap box for years echoing this line ever since the days of Matt Cutts at Google

Now with the advent of Artificial Intelligence, the world of search is changing. Of course Danny says the blue links aren't going away. But they sure are getting pushed down the page and onto the subsequent pages.

Now we all know AI is a hot-button topic for lots of people.

For marketers AI can be a real boon. Trying different copy for ads or copy and making adjustments and iterating faster with AI is now a reality and easier than ever to do.

As Matt Cutts has said since the beginning of Google and Danny repeated in his keynote, marketers need to do one thing and one thing really well. Write good content for the visitors. This is what will help you show up in GEO/AIO/SEO EIEIO. There really isn't any special sauce. And I fully believe that.

Write good content and the bots will come and slurp up your content and serve it to searchers. Now what I don't agree with is that many of those searchers will click through to read more. And that's where Danny/Google/AI companies and I deviate. Most users will get their answer from the AI response and end their search. Others, like me will indeed click the citations and read on. But the latter is far fewer than before.

Because of this marketers need to make sure they are cited in the overviews and get a link. Exactly how to do this, is still being discovered.

Overall, we're in a new world. Just like with other technology, AI is turning the World on its head.

Did you watch Danny's keynote at WordCamp US, either in-person or on the live stream? If you didn't all the talks from WordCamp US will be at WordPress.TV after the conference ends for free viewing.
