Digg Is Coming Back

Do we care? Do we need another closed ecosystem app? AI is going be involved. Shouldn't we focus on the OPEN WEB? All the questions!

Screen grab of the Digg "Coming Soon" page
Digg is coming back! Do we care?

So Kevin Rose, the original founder of Digg.com and his former-arch-rival Alexis Ohanian are bringing this once great Web 2.0 aggregator back from the dead.

At first I thought it was a neat idea and was excited. Especially since I have great respect for Kevin and Alexis and what they've done with their careers. They also both seem like decent people, despite their enormous success.

But the more I thought about it, do we really need another walled garden? Isn't Reddit, for this type of thing enough?

The open web has a similar ecosystem/app called Lemmy, which operates very similar to Reddit and has some traction? I just don't seen the need for another closed Reddit-like competitor in the marketplace.

Now I will admit if I'm wrong and Digg takes off. But I just wish they would release it with open protocols and... well... less... Artificial Intelligence.

But who am I to judge? TikTok, despite it's legal uncertainty here in the US and Instagram are both walled gardens that people still use regularly. Some have even made their fortunes on the platforms.

What do you think? Do we need Digg to come back? You won't see me complaining that Kevin and his co-host Alex Albrecht have revived the Diggnation podcast, but Digg itself? 😜

Core Committers Struggle to Keep WordPress Moving as Automattic Steps Back Again
Core committers warn of burnout and stalled progress on the Block Editor as Automattic slashes its contribution hours once again.

I'm not going to say that Matt Mullenweg and Automattic pulling back contributions to the open source project isn't worrisome. I still have faith in the project and the CMS.

Who Leads WordPress Businesses? The Data Confirms It’s (Still) Not Women
When WP Includes launched its Gender Equality in WordPress Businesses report at WordCamp US last September, it landed with barely a ripple. Co-authored by WP Includes co-founder Siobhan McKeown and myself, the study was the first of its kind—offering a data-driven look at gender disparities in WordPress businesses, along with practical recommendations for change.

We need more women helping run WordPress and other projects. It's still to much a bro-culture.

WordPress Foundation Secures Trademarks for “Managed WordPress” and “Hosted WordPress” in UK and Australia
The WordPress Foundation has secured trademark registrations for “Managed WordPress” and “Hosted WordPress” in the United Kingdom and Australia, as part of its broader efforts to enforce WordPress trademark compliance.

I know this is turning into quite a bit of WordPress news, but there's a lot this time. The WordPress Foundation is clamping down on trademarks. This just feels so ick to me. 😜😵‍💫

I am not a big fan of Spotify and I'm not surprised by this. Full disclosure: Entrepreneur's Enigma and Digital Marketing Dive are both on Megaphone, which is owned by Spotify. Regardless, the way Spotify tries to lock up podcasts and doesn't play nice with the rest of the ecosystem is bothersome to say the least.

ABC Shuts Down FiveThirtyEight, and Pulls the Plug on Its Website
From the perspective of a company the size of Disney, it would cost veritable pennies to keep FiveThirtyEight’s website around forever. What a disgrace.

I agree with John Gruber. Big media is too quick to get rid of sites when they could keep the alive. Especially sites as important as FiveThirtyEight.

AI Search Engines Are Confidently Wrong Too Often
A new study from Columbia Journalism Review showed that AI search engines and chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Deepseek Search, Microsoft Copilot, Grok and Google’s Gemini, are just wrong, way too often. I have said this time and time again, when I see an AI Answer, at this point, I just skip over it because I know I cannot trust it and this proves that.

Yea, this is concerning.
