Communities Are The Rage

With centralized social media showing many of us how NOT to build community, people and brands are turning to community platforms to build out their own slice of the Web.

I recently joined a community called Studio Sonder, run by Demi Aspey, Ph.D. It's a creative community for people to get together and help each other be inspired, be creative, and grow.

I liked the idea of the group and having a community around to motivate me is crucial, especially since I work remote. Demi's community fits perfectly.

As corporate and centralized social media continues down the journey of enshittification of its products, I'm looking at you Facebook and X, People are longing for community. And not to left out, brands want to engage with the right people. Having a tailored community, off big social, for your brand or group is the best way to engage and build credibility.

Facebook and LinkedIn Groups Are A Dead End

People are finally realizing that Facebook Groups aren't the place to build and LinkedIn Groups have never taken off. To be honest, LinkedIn has neglected it's groups feature so much, and it's an untapped goldmine if you ask me.

So now enter, Skool, Discord, and Slack, to name a few. People want to engage with people and brands on their terms and in closed communities where they aren't the product.

Studio Sonder is on Mighty Networks, another great community platform and i know others use Circle.so.

I'm personally building out the Podcast Mastery group on a new innovative community platform called Skyler.Network.

There's no lack of places to build your community. And, if you own your community then you're not at the mercy of the algorithms or the evil CEOs.

Build Your Own Community. Use Social To Promote It!

The best way to grow a group around your brand or your product is build it out on one of these platforms and then use the socials to promote the community. Encourage people to sign up and direct them to your communities.

In the end, as we've seen, we can't trust the corporate and centralized social media giants to have our best interests at heart. We need to build our club houses where we control them

Microsoft is shutting down Skype
The end of the Skype era.

Pour a little out for Skype. Man, it has been a era. I honestly didn't know Skype was still a thing. But man, as a podcaster, Skype was how we did podcasts in the 2010's. It WAS the way to communicate across countries. Kind of a sad moment.

Skype is dead. What happened?
Microsoft is shutting down Skype. It will go offline in May 2025. “We’ve learned a lot from Skype over the years that we’ve put into Teams as we’ve evolved teams over the last seven to eight years,…

Google Crawler Updates Causing Spikes In Crawling For Some Sites
Some sites, hosted on some CDNs (content delivery networks), are experiencing a big spike in server response times for crawling, while seeing a drop in total crawl requests. So technically, the crawling has dropped but Google is taking much longer to crawl a lot less.

At this point, nothing Google does is surprising.

Survey: 42% of people say Google Search is becoming less useful
More than half of respondents also said they rely on their community for information rather than Google or other search engines.

Yep. They are making it total crap.

Automattic Hit With Class Action Over WP Engine Dispute, Accused of Anti-Competitive Tactics
Automattic is facing a class action lawsuit over its feud with WP Engine, with a cybersecurity expert accusing CEO Matt Mullenweg of waging “nuclear war” against the hosting company at the expense of hundreds of thousands of its customers.

This was bound to happen and I'm surprised it took this long, to be honest.

Not surprised by this at all.

The new categories could enable broader enforcement of social media age restrictions.

Good move on Apple's part. I especially appreciate this effort as a parent of a teen.

“It’s a lemon”—OpenAI’s largest AI model ever arrives to mixed reviews
GPT-4.5 offers marginal gains in capability and poor coding performance despite 30x the cost.

This is going to happen. And it sucks when it does. The AI race is heating up and we're going to see more crap as much as we're going to see really cool things coming from these AI companies.

Mozilla says it deleted promise because “sale of data” is defined broadly.

World’s Largest Call Center Deploys AI to “Neutralize the Accent” of Indian Employees
The French company that owns the largest call center is using similar technology to “soften” its India-based agents’ accents.

An interesting use of AI tech. A bit dystopian, but also handy, because we've all dealt with call centers where you can't understand what the representative is saying, due to their accent.
