AI Is Here To Stay... How Do We Use It For Our Benefit?
AI isn't going anywhere. If anything it's getting more and more prevalent in our daily lives.
Recently I finished listening to the latest episode of Intelligent Machines on the TWiT network where they talked to Matthew Kirschenbaum who is going from University of Maryland's English department to be a professor English and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Virginia.
Let let that second part of his new position sink in – Professor of English and AI.
Clearly UVA's administration sees the writing on the wall – AI is here to stay and we should learn how to best use it for our advantage.
It wasn't too long ago when educators were trying to quash the use of AI in education. Now many are learning to embrace the technology and learn how to teach students to still use their brains while using AI.
AI In The Business World
AI can be a useful tool in many industries, especially marketing. Tools like Castmagic and Opus Clip help people find the most relevant pieces of information to share with their audiences online, without all the leg work.
Tools like Descript help cut down the editing time of podcasts and videos exponentially making the act of creating content much easier and accessible.
Don't Be A Luddite
Being a Luddite, refusing to use AI can hazardous. Many companies, for good or ill, are turning to AI to augment their workforce and not knowing how to use AI could hurt upward mobility in companies of all sizes.
But, I'm not trying to whitewash the down sides of AI here. It's not all sunshine and rainbows with AI.
It often hallucinates facts, making checking the facts it gives important, and AI has proven to be horrible for the environment. The environmental impact can be offset with the use of renewable energy to power these systems, but this is still in the process of ramping up.
In the end, AI is here to stay. It's not going anywhere. Learning how to use it for business and life in general is important.
